Cool First Friends for Baby: Organic Stuffed Animals
About 5 years ago, my husband and I started “going green.” It’s funny actually how it all started. We wanted to remove high-fructose corn syrup from our diets thinking that was what was keeping our waistlines a little thick. So, we started reading labels and found out that HFC is pretty much in every single food we loved. Over the years, we have honed down our waistlines, and our food choices to include organic or locally grown, and we both cook a heck of a lot more. When our first child was on the way, we’d already agreed to using “green” choices for the baby nursery, reusable diapers, and make our own baby food. I remember I had a stuffed bear I slept with as a little girl, and I thought I wanted to get something sweet for my baby to sleep with when she’s a little older. Then, the nightmare of looking for toys that didn’t have questionable chemicals, dyes, and paints started. Once I started looking, I did find some really fun organic stuffed animals, and I wanted to share my top 3 choices with you.
Why I Chose Organic Stuffed Animals
When I started my journey into only only choosing organic stuffed animals. I didn’t have children prior to this, so I honestly never thought about the materials that a stuffed animal could be stuffed with or what chemicals may be in the fabrics that make up the body of the animal. Once I started reading up on it, there was only one choice to make.
Bears and Ducks and Turtles, Oh My!
Actually the Dandelion Classic Organic plushie was the first toy I found. There is an absolutely adorable bear, and the line of stuffed animals also includes a duck and a turtle. All three are made from organically grown cotton and filled with corn fibers. There are no plastic parts or pieces. My baby chewed all over this bear when she was teething, and a toss in the washer and a tumble in the dryer and Mr. Bear-Bear was as good as new.
The Cutest Green Dog You Ever Saw
Mary Meyer Organic Little Sprouts Plush Puppy is one of the cutest organic stuffed animals I’ve run across. This little dog is friendly with a sweet face. Plus, he is made with 100% cotton fabrics and stuffing. If you’re not familiar with the Mary Meyer line of toys, none are made with any materials containing pesticides, toxic chemicals, or harmful dyes. He’s only 5-inches tall, so he’s easy for little hands to carry and play with.
Farm Buddies Cool Line of Organic Stuffed Animals
My daughter went crazy for one of these at a friend’s house during a playdate. Her little friend had a ballerina mouse, and I was so thrilled to find there’s a lot of choices among the Farm Buddies. There’s also a cow, dog, piggy, and pony in different guises as pirates, ballerinas, and a chef. They are all made with 100% organic cotton and stuffed using 100% hypoallergenic corn fiber filling with no pesticides or chemicals. There are no loose parts, and there’s a rattle in the head.
At the end of the day, I just want to give my baby the healthiest choices in the home she lives in, the foods she eats, and the toys she plays with. The smallest changes like making sure even the stuffies she plays with are organic stuffed animals gives me more piece of mind as a mom for the choices I make for my child.
