It’s true, I bowed to peer pressure. I really had my heart set on doing my first baby’s room like a rain forest. It was inspired by an animal print crib bedding set I got as a gift. It had leaves and leopard spots on it, I just loved it because it was so unique and different from everything else I had been looking at. Then, when I was gushing to my mother-in-law about my plans for a baby nursery featuring a rain forest, jungle animals, and maybe even a mural on the wall; she said something that stopped me mid-sentence. “You know,” she said, “Animal prints always look like something that should be sold on the side of the road with velvet Elvis paintings.” It really bothered me. I sort of liked those velvet Elvis paintings too. Was my sense of style that completely broken? I soon had my answer. My Mother-in-Law apparently repeated my plans to a few other relatives who were fast on my phone telling me how I would regret it. It was my first baby, and I bowed to pressure and wound up doing something for nursery decor I wasn’t as enamored with, but our baby didn’t seem to notice her walls were missing leopards and an Amazon rainforest.

Great Looks in Animal Print Crib Bedding

Zebra is a tame choice with its crisp black and white that really makes a nursery look sharp when you combine it with primary colors in other elements; such as a red lamp. Another item that looks good is a crib mobile with wild animals. Leopard has always been one of my favorite patterns. Much like zebra, leopard goes with a myriad of colors. Both primary and secondary colors look great with it. I like colors in the green and brown family to really set off the “animal” in the animal print. Yes, in looking back maybe it’s a little “adult” for a baby room but I still like my rainforest idea. I wound up not using any animal prints for any of my kids, and it’s a decision I regret.

Years ago, it started with simply cutting high fructose out of my family’s diet. It led to a drastic reduction in chemicals my family was exposed to in foods, cleaning, and even the fabrics we put on our bodies. I started slowly replacing my sheets, and clothing with organic fabrics. I’m a huge fan of bamboo. It sounds as though it would be stiff and uncomfortable, but it’s very soft fabric and ideal for your baby’s skin. You can find a large selection of animal print fabric choices for everything from crib bedding to window treatments.

Everyone Has a Strong Opinion About Animal Prints

It’s amazing. Ask the people around you how they feel about animal prints, they will have an opinion. It’s not one of those questions that people even have to hem and haw about, they like it or they don’t. At the end of the day, I”m sorry I bowed to peer pressure and didn’t do my baby’s nursery as I wanted. I nearly got talked out of purple for my second child. But I held fast to that decision, and I’m glad I did. Ditto with my next baby. I got to design the nursery I wanted. My dear husband is awesome, and he’s happy to go along with pretty much anything. I’m curious how do you feel about it? Are you pro or anti-animal print for nurseries? Do you feel it looks cheap or cutting edge? Sound off and let me know!
